Here, I would like to share my experience of English learning.
I think one of the best ways to improve reading comprehension for English learners is
to read English newspapers, such as China Daily, South China Morning Post, and etc
for news reports are relatively easier to understand, compared with novel, prose and
poetry. The reasons are listed below. First of all, news reports are short and written
in Standard English with few colloquial expressions; therefore we may find that news
reports are of an average level of difficulty for the early stage of English learning.
Secondly, when reading newspapers, we often find that we have acquired the
information from other media; in this case, it renders us an advantage in guessing the
new words from the context and better understanding of the passage. Lastly, due
to the nature of news reports, many passages of the reports about the same events
are bound to use the same set of vocabularies, which enable us to memorize those
vocabularies easily. In summary, newspapers are suitable materials for English learners
to practice reading comprehensions. When I was in the second year of the
university, I kept reading English newspapers for 3 months and made rapid progress
in reading comprehension and vocabulary and then switched to English novels.
